good daughter

Don’t tell my little sister, but I’m pretty sure I’m my mom’s favorite. Especially today.

It all started in October. James Taylor announced a new tour with his son, and opening night was scheduled for the Brady Theater here in Tulsa.

My mom loves James Taylor. Like… loves.

So I did what any good daughter would do… I expressed little to no interest in the show. James Taylor at Brady Theater? What? I pretended to forget to buy tickets, and put on my best apathetic face when she told me that the show was sold out.

And unbeknownst to her, I was really excited about the show. I sold my left kidney and bought tickets the moment they went on sale. I got great seats. Best seats in the house. And I didn’t say a word.

I kept my mouth shut, and watched my mother writhe in disappointment. I know it was wrong, but it’s all I can do to get back at her for all the guilt she’s pulled on me. I love you, Mom… but when you told me that you were going to just show up at the concert and try to buy scalped tickets, I had to hold back the laughter. It was delicious.

Christmas day, I finally let her in on my secret. Four tickets to the concert she was dying to see. Let’s just say I won.

Her birthday was this week, so it worked perfectly as a double gift. Perfect.

So last night, my family came up…

We’re beautiful, right? Just so you know, this is definitely our Christmas card picture this year…

Sushi for dinner at Yokozuna. Made it to the concert at the perfect time.

And it was amazing. Better than amazing. James Taylor, Ben Taylor Magical.

Mom cried. A lot. That’s the greatest testament to the success of my Christmas gift. I’m set for the next few years.

Great videos, looks like it would have been a wonderful concert, its about a year ago I was fortunate to see James Taylor and Carole King in Melbourne on their tour and it was brilliant. Cheers!

  2. Definitely a good daughter! Blessings to you, and yes, all three of you are beautiful…

You are a really good daughter. I would like to think that if I had a daughter she would have done the same for me. I saw Sweet Baby James about 5 years ago and he was just great. If I am ever on edge all I have to do is put on some James Taylor tunes and my nerves just calm right down.
And that’s a great Christmas pic of your family! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh my,that is THE nicest present a JT lovin’ mom could get! We’ve seen JT 3 times; Tulsa, Little Rock, and the Memphis show, which was a family affair with 2 of my daughters, and hubby. We all sang along to “Sun on the Moon.” It was AWEsome to say the least!

Bless you for being such a sweet daughter! I know your mom was thrilled.
Missed the Tulsa show this time, but heading back to view your videos. It will be the next best thing to being there ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks for posting this!

You are a wonderful daughter. I have been on James mailing list for over a year, corrosponding with his “people”. My son is autistic and James has been in his life since he was a small baby. then I sent James and Kim a Christmas greeting this year and the response was incredible! An email inviting me and my family to his concert in Iowa (30 minutes from house) as his guest! They are holding 4 tickets to this sold out concert…just for us. What a lovely surprise, what a lovely man!

My daughter used to send me texts from college, “They’re playing James Taylor at Starbucks and it makes me think of you. We saw the closing Troubadour show in Anaheim together last summer. It was the best having her sit next to me singing along.

    HOWDY!
You are a wonderful daughter! I’ll remember your story when I see James at Carnegie Hall on April 12!!! I have a wonderful wife. James is my music hero, my guitar icon. I, too, will weep and smile and grin and laugh! Carnegie frickin’ Hall!?!?! Are you kidding? And Sting and Bette Midler and Steve Martin will also be appearing. I may never have to see another concert in my life! But that’s what I thought when I saw James at the Coronado Theatre in Rockford, Illinois. Third row..an acoustic evening! Music is the gift that will give forever! Way to go!

Thank you so much or the Videos… those guys look and sound fantastic. I saw Ben over here in the UK a couple of years back in a tiny, tiny venue. He shook our hands, signed our stuff, had his picture taken with us… the guy is a legend.

Oh man! You guys are all awesome! I can’t believe there’s been so much interest in my silly little story and my iPhone videos. The entire experience was incredible, and I’m so glad I could share it!

I loved this story! My daughter took me to see Ben Taylor a few years ago at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland. We then saw James Taylor together at Blossom Music Center and finally the James Taylor and Carole King Troubadour Reunion concert. The Taylor’s are the best! What a great idea, an intergenerational concert! My daughter, Alicia, is awesome and we love hearing great music together!

  19. David says:

Nicely recorded. What may I ask did you video the show with. Looks & sounds good.
