tastes good – hemplicious.

med school snow day #3.

So, there’s this yoga instructor at the yoga room who is hosting a cleanse/detox/nourish program of sorts this month. For some reason, I was immediately drawn to this. I mean, who doesn’t feel a little bit of grossness and exhaustion in February? I needed something to focus extra energy on besides the terrible weather and lack of sunshine.

It’s a pretty cool program that she designed. Basically, the first week you wipe a lot of things out of your diet – gluten, corn, alcohol, caffeine, meat, eggs, dairy, soy – and then you add things back into your diet to see how you’re affected by certain foods. Also, there’s a focus on knowing about your food. If you are going to eat eggs that’s totally fine, but maybe you should try to buy them from a local farm. Know where your meat is coming from. Understand what you’re putting into your body.

Really, it’s just an excuse for me to pack my fridge with beautiful fresh produce.

Of course, this would be a much easier adventure if we weren’t in the dead of winter. Oh my gosh, I miss the farmer’s market.

And surprise of all surprises, Jacob is actually on board with this. A week of weirdo veganism followed by three weeks of figuring out how the body works. Who knew he’d be into it.

Ok… by into it, I don’t mean that he’s excited. Every delicious meal I’ve made has been scarfed down and followed with a “man, that would be better with some chicken/cheese/steak.” But he’s doing it. He’s supportive. That’s what matters.

I’ve made some pretty amazing stuff while we’ve been cooped up. Hummus, an incredibly good variation on this chili, almond butter, salad dressings, quinoa, popped amaranth, roasted veggies, banana ice cream, smoothies and so much more.

This morning, I made this smoothie… and Jacob quickly finished his and said, “this tastes pretty good for shit that’s good for you.” I’m marking that down as a win.
